Foothill High School to host 31st Annual Band Review Foothill High School to host 31st Annual Band Review (October 14, 2005)

Foothill's marching band again is Rose Bowl-bound

Spectators at the 2006 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena will have the pleasure of watching the Foothill High School marching band in action. The band's invitation to perform marks its fifth appearance in the internationally renowned parade - making it the most-often invited Northern California band, said band director Bob Moorefield.

Band Boosters president Angela Mogannam has both a senior and a freshman in the band. Her son, Anthony, plays percussion and daughter, Talia, is captain of the color guard. Their dad, John, helps haul the instruments. Mogannam said, "We feel very honored to be going to the Rose Parade. I hear all the festivities that lead up to the parade are great. We get to see the floats being built," and, of course, the kids look forward to the traditional party for parade participants.

Meantime, on Oct. 22 the band and Foothill High School Color Guard will host its 31st Annual Band Review. The Review includes competitions in the Concert, Parade and Field Show categories.

Schools from all over Northern California and Reno, Nev. come to participate in this day-long competition. The Concert competition is held at Amador High School, the Parade competition takes place on Main Street and the Field Show competition is held at the Foothill High School athletic field. Rose Bowl Parade president Elizabeth Evans Wright will participate in the Band Review. On Friday Oct. 21, she'll present the band with special honors.

Like the Mogannams, the Hiratas are a veteran band family. Cathy Hirata describes her son Evan, who plays snare, as "very excited about going to the Rose Bowl, all the kids are." She said the band members are working hard and are determined to perform "their absolute best. The parade is a long one, seven miles, but they know what an honor it is."

Besides marching in the parade, she said the band will also perform at Disneyland. Then in the spring, Hirata said the band is off to the Hawaii Invitational. This past summer, most of the band toured Europe as Ambassadors of Music.
