Teens denied alcohol

Only one out of 23 underage persons was sold alcohol Friday, June 3 when they attempted to buy it at different businesses in Pleasanton as part of the police departments "Decoy Buy Program," police said.

Underage "decoys" went to 24 Pleasanton liquor stores, grocery stores and service station food marts and attempted to buy alcohol. The decoys truthfully answered questions and showed their real identification if asked by the clerk, police said.

All of the clerks asked for identification and only the clerk at the Shell station on Hopyard Rd. and Owens Dr. sold the decoy alcohol. The clerk asked for the student's identification and slid it through a scanner to verify its authenticity, but when the scanner did not work he sold the decoy alcohol without looking at the actual ID, police said. He was cited for a misdemeanor violation for selling alcohol to a minor, police said.

Pleasanton Liquors was also cited for selling alcohol to a minor when the owner refused to sell to the decoy, but then sold alcohol 15 minutes later to a minor not affiliated with the program, police said. TAPS comes back for summer

The Teen Alcohol Party Suppression (TAPS) car will be brought back this summer to raise awareness and enforce underage drinking laws, police said. TAPS will focus on DUI enforcement, party and disturbance calls, loitering complaints and curfew violations, police said. The goal is to reduce accidents and incidents of violence, police said.
