'Ready, set, ride!' 'Ready, set, ride!' (June 17, 2005)

By Jeb Bing

At the starting ramp, 25 cyclists patiently awaited the ribbon cutting and end of congratulatory speeches by city officials, on hand to dedicate Pleasanton's new $160,000 BMX track last Saturday.

Kathy Narum, chairwoman of the Parks and Recreation Commission, said planning a BMX facility started three years ago, but it was only after the city and the East Bay Regional Park District agreed to expand the nearby waterslides that a development plan was approved. The three-acre site, located off Stanley Boulevard just south of Bernal Avenue, is on land owned by the park district.

"With schools closing this week, we worked to get this facility completed so that kids would have another activity during the summer," Narum said.

The park is open from sun-up to sundown without charge and also without supervision. <łn˛@$p>
