AV's Romero takes first place in shot-put AV's Romero takes first place in shot-put (April 29, 2005)

Track squad has field day over San Ramon

Compiled by Lori Nielsen

Amador Valley's track squad turned in some great individual and team performances at its meet against San Ramon Valley. The field competitors had a great meet for the Dons with Donald Romero grabbing first place in the shot-put (a personal best), Max Deschamps taking first place in the discus and Alexa Kutlik doing double duty, placing second in both the shot-put and disc. All the boys' shot-put competitors threw for personal bests. In the team effort, the Girls Varsity matched last year's team best, which was set at NCS. Grace Elliott pushed herself hard by running the difficult triple of 800, 1600, 3200 and managed to score in each. She posted seconds in the 800 and the 3200 while finishing third by only 10 seconds in the 1600. Caitlin MacDonald continued to impress with yet another mile win running a 5:22:56. For the Boys Varsity, Will Tagg stepped up with a gutsy performance in his races; winning the 800. After cruising for much of the 3200 race, Ben DeLand said "good bye" to the San Ramon runner to take first place. Eric Lewis won the 300 hurdle race, particularly notable given that this is his first year running hurdles. In JV action, Alex Jorgensen went over 36 feet in the triple jump which prompted Coach Peter Scarpelli to announce that he will move up to Varsity next week.
Baseball
Foothill's JV team lost to cross-town rival Amador Valley 6-3. The Falcons were down early, but evened the score in the bottom of the first inning at 1-1 when lead-off hitter Brian Viceral doubled, and then raced home on a passed ball. In the second, the Dons regained the lead, 3-1, but once again Foothill battled back with 2 runs off Viceral's second hit of the day. Viceral was 3-3 at the plate and accounted for all the Foothill runs. The teams battled evenly for the next 3 innings, but in the top of the 6th Amador pushed across 3 runs to take the lead.
Boys Tennis
Amador Valley's Boys Varsity team finished its season with a win against Foothill 6-3. In the final match-up, the Dons took 5 of the 6 singles matches. Francois Genard maintained his undefeated status with his doubles partner Will Wang. The Dons finished third in the league 8-4 losing only to Monte Vista and San Ramon. Amador will lose three seniors this year: Nick Quintana, Alan McGrath and Genard. Fortunately for the Dons, most of the team will return next year.
Softball
Foothill's Varsity Girls handily beat Granada 5-0 in their recent game. Freshman Kelly Sweeney, making her first start of the season after recovering from an injury, had two hits and two RBIs. Nicole Romero led the Falcons with three hits, Brittany Throne and Roxanne each added two. Valerie Arioto pitched a one-hitter to lift the Falcons over the Matadors. Arioto struck out 12 Thursday, following her 15-strikeout performance in Tuesday's win over Monte Vista. The sophomore also had two hits and drove in two runs.

The Falcons JV team finished on top of the league rankings after their win against Granada 5-2. Jessica Seitz pitched a complete game with 11 strike-outs, 1 walk, and went 1 for 4 with two RBI's. Jennifer Vincent went 2 for 4, with a two run double. Jennifer Flaming posted a great day as well, going 2 for 3, with 1 Run, and 2 RBI's off a triple.
