Young people can apply for County Fair talent show

The Alameda County Fair is accepting applications for the Talent and Performing Arts Competition that will take place July 6 and 7. The competition is open to ages 3 to 26 and features dance and music categories. The application deadline is June 13.

There is no limit to entries and contestants can compete in as many categories as they chose. The overall winners of the competition will get cash prizes, and every participant will receive an award. The entry fees are $26 for individuals, $13 per person in a duo, and $10 per person in a group. Applications are available at the Alameda County Fair Web site, www.alamedacountyfair.com.

The dance and music categories are divided into separate competitions based on styles. Dancers can compete in jazz, tap and lyrical/ballet jazz dance. Vocalists can compete in music categories such as popular, country, religious/sacred/patriotic, and Broadway/show tunes. Both the dance and vocal competitions include an "other" category for miscellaneous entries and there is an open section for any entries that don't fit into dance or vocal competitions.

The Alameda County Fair runs from June 24 to July 10. This year's theme is, "Come Out and Play!" The Fair exhibit catalog can be found on the Fair's Web site, at the Pleasanton library and Christesen's western wear store in downtown Pleasanton. Call Youth Focus at (866) 939-6884 for information regarding the talent show and 426-7611 for information regarding the Fair. -Rebecca Guyon
