Lady Don hoops clinch league title
(February 11, 2005) Foothill wrestlers get key win, second EBAL championship
by Heidi Massie
Amador varsity girls basketball team continued its winning streak as it defeated the tough San Ramon Valley Wolves 62-60 in a close game last Friday. With this win, the Lady Dons (8-0) clinched the East Bay Athletic League title, with three games remaining in the regular season.
With 37.8 seconds to play, Amador was up 59-55. Whitney Metz went to the line twice and added the last three points, but San Ramon Valley tried to catch up, adding five points but not enough to beat Amador.
Sara VanderHorst led the team in racking up 27 points. Both Leah Munley and Metz scored 13, and Elyssa Thome added seven points to the total. Laura Heisser had a big game with a team high of nine rebounds.
Boys Wrestling
Foothill boys wrestling team was making room in its gym for a second EBAL championship banner after its key defeat of Granada on Tuesday night, 31-29. Foothill (10-0, 5-0) took control of the league after a close match with the Matadors (4-1 EBAL).
Mike Stiehr, wrestling up in the 189-weight class, delivered the first blow to Granada, pinning his much heavier opponent. Freshman Derrick Buffi landed the next blow, winning his match by decision. Tommy Wipfli then struck another, decisioning his man. With Granada's 29-28 lead, the win came down to Gary Mancini, who defeated his opponent 4-2 putting Foothill in the driver seat for a repeat league championship.
Boys Soccer
With three games left in the season and a trip to the North Coast Section championship still up for grabs, Amador varsity boys soccer team defeated Livermore 4-1 for a huge win. Early on, Joel Crompton easily beat the Cowboy Keeper with a shot to the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead. Crompton added a second goal at 22:04 with a penalty kick. Jeremy Dunn sent a cross to Luis Rocha, who made a 12-yard shot into goal and a 3-1 lead. Crompton and Matt Norlander teamed up again for the Dons final goal as Crompton sent a cross through the Livermore box. Norlander's headshot landed into the net for the 4-1 victory.
Girls JV Soccer
Despite battling a series of injuries to frontline players, the Amador JV girls soccer team (10-6-1) overcame a sluggish first half to post a 4-0 victory. Jenny Morss scored two goals for the Dons with the third and fourth by Brigitte O'Leary and Kim Learned, respectively.
"That was a beautiful goal by O'Leary," commented coach Neil Bello. O'Leary beat four Livermore defenders to get the score. Bello also cited Stephanie Crisostomo, Brooke Silva, Danielle Gwin, Catherine Kennedy and Alexa Douglas for their "strong games" and keeping Livermore from scoring.
-Writers note: As I move on to other endeavors, I want to thank the coaches, parents and Booster clubs of Amador and Foothill who helped me provide the sports wraps each week. It was fun!
