Amador and Foothill head to state civics match
(December 31, 2004) Constitution competition slated for February
by Teresa C. Brown
Pleasanton's high schools have done it again. Both Amador Valley and Foothill high schools' civics teams have advanced to the state level of the "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" competition.
The state contest will be held Feb. 2-4 at the Hilton Hotel in Sacramento.
This competition marks the fifth year Foothill has advanced to the state level. The team beat out San Francisco's Leadership High in the regional contest.
Amador competed against teams from Davis and Sacramento in the regional match to earn state-competitor status.
Last year, Amador won the state championship and represented California in the national match held during the first week of May in Washington, D.C.
"We the People" is a 12-week educational program for high school seniors that was launched in 1987. It gives students a comprehensive understanding of democracy, its fundamental principles, origins and development.
Students, in teams of four to five, answer panel questions that test their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution in competitions that begin at the congressional district level and advance to regional, state and national levels.
