by Teresa C. Brown

The Friends of the Pleasanton Library shut the book on its semi-annual fundraiser, recording $18,856 in sales. The fundraiser, which sold an estimated 40,000 books, tapes, CDs and DVDs, exceeded its spring sale receipts by $3,458. The two-day sale is staffed by adult volunteers as well as teen groups from Amador Valley High and the library's Teen Advisory.

In the children's section, the library has named Sandy Silva as the new Librarian for Children's Services. Silva comes to the Pleasanton library from Dublin, where she most recently worked, and she is experienced in the Alameda County Library system.

In other library news, the children's summer reading program wrapped up its annual program to encourage reading. The program "Maze Mania" was capped with a pool party for the 438 Kid Power volunteers, who helped younger children play the game. In addition to the reading game, the library held 40 programs.

The upcoming visiting author calendar for the library, 400 Old Bernal Ave., includes the following: ¥ Oral historian Claudia Gemar's program "Women at War: A Celebration of Women's Roles in World War II" at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 5; ¥ Authors Bob Gugoni and Joe Hilldorfer discussing "The Cyanide Canary, A Story of Injustice" at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 6; and ¥ Hans Florine, author of "Climb On! Skills for More Efficient Climbing," at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 12.
