Four honored for Community of Character trait

by Teresa C. Brown

The first honorees in a series of Community of Character recognitions were named last week for exemplifying the trait of "responsibility." Wayne Bishop, Jamie Carpenter, Larry Lagatta and Joyce Shapiro were commended by John Casey, Pleasanton Unified School District superintendent, City Manager Nelson Fialho and Chamber of Commerce President David Bouchard.

Bishop was honored for his involvement with the Boy Scouts, where he has served as Scout master, council president and division vice president.

A child care worker at Hearst Kids Club, Carpenter was recognized for successfully administering the Heimlich maneuver in August to a kindergarten student who was choking on a snack.

Lagatta, PUSD director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation, was praised for maintaining the public schools and for managing a staff of nearly 100 people.

Joyce Shapiro was honored for her efforts to bring the Great Race, a coast-to-coast antique car race, to Pleasanton last July.

Throughout the school year, PUSD, the city and a coalition of organizations, churches and businesses recognize individuals, groups or organizations demonstrating one of six Community of Character traits.
