A first-ever exhibit of Robert Rauschenberg's socio-politically inspired posters has opened at Cal State Hayward's art gallery, located at 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward.

The exhibit features a group of 17 lithographs the artist created to raise awareness for social causes that he embraced on civil rights, the environment and nuclear disarmament. The 17 posters are on loan from the artist's private collection and include several works designed for the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange when he visited China, Germany, Mexico, the former Soviet Union and other countries to encourage contemporary art and world peace.

The CSUH show, which runs through Jan. 22, also features a 1970 work Rauschenberg created for the first Earth Day celebration. The gallery is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. For more information, call 510-885-3299 or visit the gallery's Web site at www.csuhayward.edu/artgallery.
