Scratched up shopping

A Newark resident became a vandal victim when an unknown person defaced her 1995 Jeep Cherokee while she was in the Stoneridge Shopping Center in early October. Damage was estimated at $1,010.

The victim, who reported the crime Nov. 12 to police for insurance purposes, said that she parked and locked her vehicle in the lower parking lot near Nordstrom about 5 p.m. Oct. 8.

She returned to her vehicle about two hours later and noticed a long scratch that looped around the hood of her Jeep, police said. She did not notice any other damage to the vehicle and she told police she was certain the damage occurred while the car was parked at the lot. Window crashing crime

Overnight Nov. 11 a crook smashed a window and swiped a $3,000 laptop computer from an office on Franklin Drive.

Police reported that the employee secured his office door and left the building about 6:30 p.m.

He returned about 8:45 a.m. the following day and discovered that an unknown person had smashed a window in the southwest corner of the office and had taken an unsecured company laptop computer, police said.

The opening in the window was about one foot wide and a foot-and-a-half long, police said.

Officers took photographs of the break-in as well as shoe sole impressions found outside the window.
