'Remember the USO'
(September 17, 2004) Veterans, support-the-troops group holding benefit
A benefit dance is being held to support our troops, with the theme "Remember the USO." Since before WWII, the USO, a nonprofit, congressionally chartered, private organization has provided morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform.
The dance is being hosted by Operation: S.A.M. (Supporting All Military), and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6298. Entertainment will be by the Blast from the Past band and the Singing Blue Star Moms.
Tickets are $15. The people working the event will be dressed in WWII-era attire, and there be military vehicles at the entrance, recalling the old USO dances. Drawings will be held, with extra tickets for those in the Best Wartime Era Costume and active duty men and women who show their ID cards.
The dance will take place from 6-11 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Senior Center, 5353 Sunol Blvd. Tickets are available at the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce, 777 Peters Ave., or call 846-7320.
Operation S.A.M. is an all-volunteer organization that shows its support for our troops by sending comfort packages to troops deployed overseas, especially those in Iraq and Afghanistan. It has drop-off sports for donating items in Pleasanton, Livermore and Dublin. Call Penny Redmon at 443-7620.
