Dons, Falcons open football season with wins Dons, Falcons open football season with wins (September 17, 2004)

by Heidi Massie

The varsity and JV teams at Foothill and Amador Valley high schools got wins last week in their opening football games. Each team is 1-0 overall.

The Dons avenged last year's loss to Castro Valley with a big 35-17 non-league win. After falling to 14-0 in the first half, Amador got its offense in gear in the second half when Stephen Gatehouse returned the Trojans' kickoff to the 27-yard line. Runs by Nate Young and Corey Dehl moved the ball to the 43-yard line, then Cory Guillory took a handoff from Pat Glenn and broke through the middle for a long touchdown run. The extra point by Taylor Richardson cut the Trojans' lead to 14-7.

The defense got fired up and allowed only a field goal the rest of the game. A 28-yard touchdown pass from Brett Zollman to Marcus Sylva, followed by a second 29-yard touchdown, gave the Dons a 21-17 lead near the end of the third quarter. With 3:19 remaining in the game, Zollman handed off to Young and with downfield blocking by Sylva, Guillory and Dehl, Young went all the way for an 83-yard touchdown run. Kevin Gotelli followed soon after with the Dons' fifth touchdown.

Foothill Falcons feasted on Stagg, taking control of the game early, and coasted to a 43-14 victory. Willie Keck, who ran for 91 yards on 17 carries, returned the starting kickoff to Stagg's 46. That led to one touchdown after the other, with Foothill scoring 21 points in the first quarter by Daniel Georgatos, Ryan Theige and quarterback Brandon Crawford. Neima Khaila scored on a 46-yard pass from Crawford who completed 10 of 15 passes for 180 yards.

Foothill's JV defeated Stagg 36-7. The offensive line of Justin Sniffen, Thomas Holmgren, Calvin Santos, Mitchell Dal Porto and Steve Olgivie paved the way for Kyle Howell who rushed for over 100 yards and scored four touchdowns. Josh Mendonca, Jordan Johnson and Kenny Mudrack sparked the passing attack. Led by Eric Roeser and Tony Barnett, the Falcon defense limited Stagg to one touchdown and one first down the entire game.

Amador's JVs beat Castro Valley 27-13. Amador drove 60 yards for a touchdown by Brett Lewis. After giving up a touchdown to Castro Valley, Amador's B.J. Conception scored. In the third quarter Brandon Larson scored as a two-yard plunge set up a 30-yard pass from Wes Garwood to Lewis. The defense had 16 players recording tackles, including two sacks by Mike Tsairides.
Girls Water Polo

Foothill's Lady Poloists lost to California 8-7 in a close match Tuesday. Leading the scoring was Liz Usedom with three goals, Ali Davis with two, and single goals by Samantha Panger and Rachelle Vogt. Assists were recorded by Alix Kruk, Rachelle Vogt and Ali Davis.

Foothill's JV team beat California 7-1 on Tuesday at home. Maija Panger, Amanda Schmitz and Taylor Peterson each scored two goals, while Alica Harding added one. Harding and Melanie Dort added assists to the team effort.
Boys Water Polo

Amador's varsity boys water polo season started out with a big 13-2 win against Alameda in the season opener. The Dons were led by juniors Joel Fluss with five goals, Dominic Sangiacomo with three, seniors David Acorn with two, Ryan Pavlokis, Dane Hagfeldt and junior Ian Crane each scoring one. A demoralizing 13 saves by goalie Nick LaFollette held Alameda's scoring.

Foothill lost its first varsity match 15-3 to California. Scoring for Foothill were Kyle Kozloski, Dom Covello and J.T. Harechmak. Assists were tallied by Phil Cheney and Kozloski.
Girls Tennis

The Amador girls tennis team won its preseason match against Hayward 7-1 last week in 100 degree heat. Sophomore Lauren McCarthy, playing No. 1 singles, narrowly missed giving the Dons a clean sweep, losing 5-7, 4-6 in a tough match that lasted almost two hours. Doubles teams Sanam Bahtia and Rene Wood, Lauren Barraza and Stephanie Gatten, Mika Bahtia and Becca Carr, and Julianne Campolo and Melinda Hespen triumphed as well.
