(September 17, 2004) Voter forms available
Editor,
One of the important services provided by the League of Women Voters is maintaining a supply of Voter Registration Cards in convenient locations throughout the community. Unfortunately, the Livermore-Amador Valley League of Women Voters has experienced vandalism of boxes that hold the forms and has found forms thrown in the garbage. Consequently, people who want to register to vote have been frustrated and disappointed in their efforts to find Voter Registration Cards. Anyone who sees forms in the garbage or registration containers being vandalized is asked to call the League at 433-VOTE (433-8683). This is also the number to call if you have any questions about voting or the November election.
Citizens wanting to register will find forms available at the following locations in Pleasanton: the library, Post Offices on Black Avenue and on Chabot Drive, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and at Pleasanton schools. Forms are also available in Livermore at Las Positas College and other locations, in Dublin and in Sunol at the Post Office and Sunol School.
In order to be qualified to vote Tuesday, Nov. 2, you need to register by Oct. 18. In the near future the Livermore-Amador Valley League will have "Pros and Cons" available that will provide information about the state issues on the ballot. In addition, copies of "Easy Voters," explaining the ballot measures, will be available at the libraries and distributed to the high schools.
To learn more about the November election, please visit the League of Women Voters' Web site, www.smartvoter.org, to find useful information and links to other sites.

Monumental task
Editor,
Donlon Elementary School opened the 2004-05 year in its new Portable Village. While our school is undergoing a major modernization, classes will be held in portables for the next 12 to 15 months. Our Portable Village would not have been ready for our opening Aug. 30 without the help of many individuals. First and foremost, a heartfelt thanks goes out to each and every teacher here at Donlon. They spent many hours of their own time during the summer to prepare their rooms for the opening of school. Our "Back to School Nights" were held on the first two nights of school, and as one walked from room to room we observed the dedication and commitment that each and every teacher here at Donlon has for our students. Our maintenance staff, facilities department, custodial crew, warehouse staff and technology department worked many hours during the summer to ensure our portables were up and running by the start of school.
A special thank you to our community, parents and students for their patience and willingness to be adaptable to all of the changes. Naming everyone who helped would require an endless list! Setting up a "new school" in less than eight weeks was a monumental task and took tremendous teamwork. Without a doubt, teamwork prevailed, and this administrator thanks all for their hard work and commitment to putting kids first.
