Habitat for Humanity to launch project
(September 17, 2004) Celebration will be chance to learn more
East Bay Habitat for Humanity will kick off construction of its 22-home development in Livermore with a celebration on Sunday, Sept. 26.
The celebration, which is open to the public, begins at 2 p.m. at 732 Hayes Ave. and the festivities include refreshments, entertainment and children's activities.
With Pleasanton, Livermore and other Tri-Valley volunteers helping make the development a reality, Habitat for Humanity will construct three- and four-bedroom homes on a two-acre site on East and Hayes avenues.
The development will be constructed in three phases during the next two years. The homes in the development are being built for low-income, working families and will be energy efficient, using "green" building techniques such as solar energy.
The development project has been planned since spring 2000, when the city of Livermore began discussions with Habitat for Humanity about building homes there.
Eventually, Habitat was able to acquire property on East and Hayes avenues and began preliminary sub-contractor work, such as grading the site, in August. The project is expected to be complete by 2006.
East Bay Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1988 and since that time the nonprofit organization has completed 74 single-family residences in Alameda and West Contra Costa counties.
