Drug scare at high school Drug scare at high school (September 17, 2004)

17 treated for taking anti-psychotic med

by Teresa C. Brown

Seventeen Village High School students were treated and released from area hospitals Sept. 9 after ingesting a prescription drug distributed by one of the teens.

After noticing a number of students exhibiting dizziness and drowsiness, school administrators called 911 about 10 a.m., said school district spokeswoman Myla Grasso.

Emergency medical responders transported the students to ValleyCare Medical Center as well as to San Ramon Medical Center and Kaiser in Walnut Creek, Grasso said.

All of the students were treated and released the same day, with some of the students back in classes the following day, she added. The ages of the students were not released.

While the incident is still under police and school investigation, Grasso said it is believed one student brought the anti-psychotic drug Seroquel to the school and passed the drug out to other students. The prescription drug is used to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

The student responsible may face severe consequences, Grasso said, including possible expulsion.
