(July 30, 2004) Pony Black Sox take sectional tourney title, advance to regionals
After facing tough competitors throughout the Pony Sectional Tournament last week, the Pleasanton Black Sox emerged victors in the championship game against Diablo Valley in a 9-2 victory.
With this tournament win, the team of 14-year-olds will continue their march towards the Pony World Series with play at the Pony Regional Tournament in Los Altos, which began July 27.
In the championship game held July 22, Diablo Valley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and the Black Sox were retired three up to bat and three down in their half of the first inning.
Diablo Valley opened up the second inning with a leadoff single, but Pleasanton's Christian Ruge and J.R. Graham turned a double play and pitcher Robbie LeClair struck out the last batter to end the Diablo's rally.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Black Sox offense came to life. Troy Channing led off with a single that was followed by Graham's RBI single, bringing the game to a tie score.
A hit by the pitcher put Tom Bennett on the bags, loading the bases for Brett Christopher's three-RBI double that boosted the Sox to a 4-1 lead.
Diablo Valley struck back with a run in the third, narrowing the lead to 4-2. The Black Sox offense hit back with three runs, powering through the fourth inning with RBI doubles by Channing and Brandon Renker.
With two more runs notched up in the sixth inning, the Black Sox secured the championship title with a 9-2 victory.
LeClair earned complete game victory on the mound, striking out nine and allowing only five hits. Channing, from his catcher's position, had two great pick-off plays including the final out.
Leading up to the championship game, the Black Sox won a tight defensive battle against tournament host Pinole and that team's powerful lineup.
Early in the game on a walk and an RBI single, Pinole grabbed a 1-0 lead, which they held until the fifth inning.
LeClair's left field throw to home stopped a Pinole base runner from scoring and set the stage for the Sox' aggressive defense game.
In the third, Pinole was in prime position for a score with a runner on third and no outs. But, defensive plays by Channing and Graham plus a key strikeout by Howard kept Pinole at bay, ending the inning scoreless.
Pinole's lead was doomed when Howard hammered a double to the fence with one out. Sam Dierking laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Howard to third, and Christopher hit a pop fly down the first base line, bringing him to third base and Howard across home plate to tie the game.
Powered by momentum, Carson Kvaternik delivered the game-winning RBI with a two-strike single over the shortstop, driving Christopher in.
Pony Red Sox All Stars take two wins at tourney
The Pleasanton Pony Red Sox 13U All Stars came home with two wins and two losses after traveling to Martinez for a USSSA tournament.
In their first game the Red Sox fell to the SCC Stars 4-3 in a tightly matched game.
The Red Sox scored early when Drew Helenihi was hit by a pitch and stole his way home. Nico Victoria hammered a double to the right field fence, but was left stranded as the Stars defense shut down the Sox.
In the second inning, the Red Sox scored one with the back-to-back base hits by A.J. Funk and Cody Demera and Jonathan Sa's walk.
Not to be out-done, the Stars answered back with base hits, walks and stolen bases to boost their score by two.
In the fourth, Funk took first after being hit by a pitch and in aggressive offense play, he stole home and scored for the Sox.
Holding the Red Sox at bay, the Stars closed the game for the win.
The Red Sox went on to face the Pacific Sluggers, who ultimately earned the game win.
The Sluggers came out strong and dominated the first inning 11-0.
Red Sox offense fought back in the second inning, scoring five runs from Funk's walk, a double by Chris Doleski, singles by Sa and Paul Davis, Helenihi base walk after being hit by the pitcher, followed by back-to-back base hits by Steven Pangelinan and Garry Lenhardt.
But sloppy Sox defense allowed the Sluggers two more runs. The Sox rallying back with five runs in the third when Harold Zosel, Funk, Davis and Helenihi singled, Doug Holecheck hit a sacrifice fly, Doleski hammered a double and Demera walked.
In the fourth, the Sluggers fought back with two more runs while the Red Sox came back with one run from Lenhardt's double and base hits by Zosel and Funk.
But a Red Sox rally wasn't enough to beat the clock. Time was called with the Sluggers controlling the game 15-11.
With two losses behind them, the Red Sox burst into their third game, dominating the Xtreme White with a 9-1 win.
Both Doleski and Zosel pitched, allowing only five scattered hits. The Sox started off solid in the first inning with Helenihi's stealing a base and consecutive RBIs by Pangelinan and Lenhardt.
The Red Sox scored again in the second with Helenihi's bunt and Pangelinan's sacrifice fly.
Keeping the pressure on, the Red Sox offense continued to pound on the Xtreme with Victoria stealing his way home after taking first base on a walk.
Helenihi, Pangelinan and Lenhardt also played aggressive adding to the score with home-plate steals.
In their final game, the lower seeded Red Sox gave the Woodcreek Lobos a surprise 8-6 upset.
Doleski and Funk pitched for the Red Sox and combined for eight strikeouts.
The Sox started got off to slow start, scoring only one run in the first five innings. Helenihi took base on an error, stole second, advanced on a pass ball and scored on Lenhardt's sacrifice bunt.
In the second, both Sean Finn and Holecheck were left stranded after singling their way on the bags, and at the bottom the fifth, the Red Sox trailed 6-1.
At bat at the top of the sixth, the Red Sox offense started to flex their muscle. Pangelinan scored on a steal, but the real Red Sox onslaught began in the seventh inning as they rattled the Lobos defense.
Funk took first after he was hit by a pitch. Finn connected and got on first with an error, bringing Funk home, and Sa landed a single that brought Finn across home plate.
Pangelinan took the batter's box with Sa, Holecheck and Helenihi loading the bases; he smashed a double that brought in all three runners and put the Red Sox in the lead.
Lenhardt walked and Victoria's RBI brought in another run to seal the Red Sox game at 8-6.
