(May 21, 2004) Dons baseball slams Granada 10-2
by Heidi Massie
Foothill High's varsity softball team and boys varsity lacrosse team each clinched their East Bay Athletic League titles last week, seeding them for the Northern California Section championships.
The Lady Falcons varsity softball team clinched the EBAL title behind the no-hit pitching of Valerie Arioto. Foothill shut out California 7-0, improving their record to 18-5-1, 9-1 EBAL.
Arioto struck out 10 Grizzlies (11-11, 3-7) and walked none. She was two Falcons errors away from a perfect game, but got her third no-hitter of the season. Roxanne Nieto went two for three at bat. Arioto drove in three runs, with Nicole Romero, Jessica Lau and Amy Crawford each with RBIs.
Foothill's boys varsity lacrosse beat Amador last Friday night 15-8 to win the EBAL League Championship. The Falcons' league record of 7-1 tied Monte Vista's record, resulting in a co-championship.
Foothill found the net early, scoring two goals that were quickly answered by Jim Prescott who put the Dons on the board. Jimmy Parsons, Chris VanLooey and Steve Mundt each added goals. Marcus Sylva scored four in the fourth quarter but the Dons couldn't close the gap with Foothill. Amador's Mike Fan had several great saves, ending his senior year as one of the top goalies in the EBAL.
The Dons' Mike Fan made the U-19 Nor-Cal team, along with Foothill's Loren Schoch, Mark Swoboda, John Honea and Ben Zils who will be on the All-Star team. Falcon Colin Tracey was selected for the U-19 USA West Team, and Dons Jimmy Parson, Marcus Sylva, Clatin Kuhns, Chris VanLooey and Jeff Mehl will be playing for the U-17 Nor-Cal team. Amador senior Steve Mundt will play for Sonoma State next year.
Baseball
In a must game for Amador's chances to make the NCS playoffs, the varsity baseball team had a big 10-2 win over Granada. Rob Learned had a huge game at the plate and on the mound, clubbing a single and grand slam.
Amador opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning with RBIs by Mike Purpura and Stephen Gatehouse. The Dons scored another three in the fourth thanks to Pat Glenn's lead-off double and consecutive singles by Chris Lewis, Brett Holt and Learned. The Dons put the game away in the bottom of the sixth when Gatehouse and Lewis singled to open the inning. After Holt reached first on an error to load the bases, Learned jumped on the first pitch and launched it over the left-field fence for a grand slam, giving the Dons a 10-0 lead.
Track and Field EBAL Championships
Saturday's track and field EBAL championships produced individual wins for athletes from both high schools. As teams, the Amador girls finished fifth, followed by Foothill in sixth. Foothill boys finished second in EBAL with Amador in fifth place. Individuals who finished in the top six positions in each event will compete in the NCS meet tomorrow at Granada.
Amador's Sarah Stacionis took first in the 1600 (5:10.24), followed by teammate Caitlin MacDonald (5:11.22). Stacionis also finished second in the 800, followed by Foothill's Katie Fryman. Christina Edholm finished third in shotput for Foothill and fourth in discus throw.
Foothill's Connor McCabe finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.44. Teammate Stephan Johnston won the 800 in 1:56.53, followed by Amador's Justin Turnberg (1:59.80). Senior Andrew Galbraith took first for Foothill in the high jump at 6-4. Amador's Kyle Montgomery won the triple jump at 45-3 and one quarter.
