(May 21, 2004) People want 'Lithia-type' park
Editor,
The day of the Bernal Block Party I walked around with a sandwich board promoting a Lithia-type park (Ashland, Ore.) for the Bernal Property.
I had two frequently asked questions: "What organization do you represent?" The answer is "none." The other was: "Why do you feel so passionately about this?"
I thought about the last question and decided it was because I grew up in Fort Collins, Colo., a block from a 40-acre landscaped park with a meandering road to a playground, large picnic area, tennis courts and a lake where I swam and ice skated. I was always told that this park was there because of my grandfather. He died before I was born, and I don't know whether he gave money to it or voted for it. Anyway, the park was there because of my grandfather and people like him.
Many people looked at my pictures of Lithia. It was easy to approach the "over 50" people because I knew they would support such a park. It was interesting that the younger people, with strollers and young children, approached me and said, "This is the kind of park we need." "We have enough sports fields." "I want my children to see and experience the beauty of nature." "I wish, when my mother comes to visit, I could take her to a park like that."
It was a long day, but I am convinced that the people of Pleasanton will strongly support this type of park.

Suit Drive results amazing
Editor,
I want to send my heartfelt thanks out to the Pleasanton community for its strong support of the Windermere Properties of the East Bay Suit Drive for the Wardrobe for Opportunity. We collected an amazing number of items in all sizes - over 500 suits, business clothes and accessories - all from local residents. Their generosity will enable limited-income women and men to achieve financial independence. Anyone who missed the clothing drive and would like to help this wonderful charity can call the Wardrobe for Opportunity at 935-2146 for information on how to donate or volunteer. Thanks again to everyone who opened their hearts and closets for others in need.
