(May 21, 2004) Work permits required
Student work permits will be issued at three school sites this summer, and summer permits expire around Sept. 7. Students 18 and under need work permits for jobs during the summer or school year, and proof of age and school enrollment are required.
Permits are available at high schools during the academic year, through June 15. The summer school office, operating at Harvest Park Middle School, 4900 Valley Ave., will issue the permits June 16-July 23; Amador Valley Adult & Community Education office, 215 Abbie St., will issue permits July 26-30; and beginning Aug. 2, the high schools will resume issuing them.
For student theatrical permits for modeling and entertainment jobs, a parent or guardian must send a written request with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the California State Labor Commissioner, 1515 Clay St., Room 801, Oakland 94612. For information, call (510) 557-7878.
Host a great racer
Individuals, businesses, churches, clubs and groups are invited to Host-A-Racer at the "Welcome the Great Race" celebration Friday, July 2, for $100 per car. Pleasanton has been designated an official overnight city for the 22nd running of the Great Race, with more than 120 vintage automobiles driving across America.
Hosts will greet the driver and navigator of the sponsored car, and a sign with the host's name will be placed next to it on Main Street. A free event will take place from 5-9 p.m. on Main and side streets, and the cars are scheduled to begin coming under the Arch at 6 p.m., with one arriving every minute.

The winning notes
Foothill High bands, color guard and choirs took top honors at respective competitions held recently. At a weeklong competition in Honolulu, the marching band placed first in parade and field competitions and earned Grand Sweepstakes honors. The jazz band took Sweepstakes accolades while the color guard snapped up the Sweepstakes in parade and first place in the field show.
In a separate competition, the school choirs competed at Paramount's Great America on May 1, earning four trophies. The men's, women's and mixed choirs each took first place as well as best overall, the fourth consecutive year Foothill has earned that title.
