Start of the trail
(May 07, 2004) Callippe Preserve trail should open in late August
Two miles of trails will be open for hiking, biking and horseback riding in late August at the Callippe Preserve Open Space south of town. The hillside trail will be 40-60 inches wide and has been labeled easy to moderate. It will also cross creeks on its path around the golf course, which will open later in 2004.
The city awarded a construction agreement for the trails to the U.S. Forest Service on Tuesday night. USFS has a nationwide program, known as Trails Unlimited, to help communities develop such trails. Its representatives have visited the Callippe Preserve site and laid out an alignment that is cost effective for long-term maintenance as well as for the construction of the trail, according to the city staff report.
Trails Unlimited will provide training to city staff in the areas of design, construction and maintenance starting in early August to build the unimproved trail.
The project is not to exceed $75,000, to be paid from Transportation Development Act funds.
