(May 07, 2004) Amador's Mike Ortega wins golf EBAL Championship
by Heidi Massie
It's been an incredible season for the Foothill varsity girls lacrosse team, whose only blemish on their record is a tie. The team remains undefeated (16-0-1) following its Tuesday win over Carondelet 13-8, and is ranked No. 1 in all of California. With only a few games remaining in the season, the team is eyeing the NCS championship.
"We hope to continue our unbeaten streak and win the first NCS Lacrosse Tournament in May," said Stu Brokowsky, who has coached the team since its inception three years ago. "This has been a very special year for Foothill. I felt that many teams were looking forward to beating us because we lost eight starters. The girls have withstood all of the challenges thus far."
The team may have lost some starters to graduation last year, but it has had no effect on this year's performance - talent runs deep on the team.
"Sarah Rachmiel has been a big surprise," said Brokowsky. "I gave her some skills to work on in the off-season, and she has become our leading scorer."
Rachmiel leads the team with a 4.5 goal per game average. Top scorers Jackie Pugh, Aly Kaye, Hayley Saxton and Nicole Schmidt are all able assisters and have scored over 10 goals each, he said.
"Cristen Andrews is the best all-round player I have seen in Northern California," said Brokowsky of the senior, who will play for UC Berkeley next year. "Jaime Oetman and Kristen Brophy are a nightmare for the oppositions' top players," he added.
The Foothill defense is equally solid, holding its opponents to few goals. With goalie Shari Brokowsky, who will play for Whittier College next year, and Ngozi Kanu, Carrie Andrews and Danielle Wilhite as the last line of defense, it has been hard for opponents to score.
"We know how important it is to play offense and defense with equal intensity," said coach Brokowsky. Obviously, that strategy has paid off.
Boys Lacrosse
Foothill's varsity boys lacrosse gave their fans an exciting show against San Ramon Valley on Tuesday, when the Falcons won 14-13 in overtime.
San Ramon attempted five goals in OT, but Foothill goalie Chris Santos stopped the Wolves cold. Foothill immediately answered with a scoring drive to win the game. Santos had 19 saves, while Lauren Schoch and Jesse Painter led with four goals each. Colin Tracy added three, and Mark Swoboda, Ben Zills and Mikel Stevens added one apiece.
Boys Golf
The Amador Valley Dons Boys Golf Team saved the best for last as they tied California High for first place with a score of 395 in the EBAL Championship played at Wente Golf Course. Even with this great accomplishment, the Dons were one shot short of moving on to next week's NCS qualifying tournament. California High and third-place perennial champs Monte Vista (402), along with Foothill who finished fifth (428), will advance to NCS next week.
But the Dons still came away with a victory in Mike Ortega who won the tournament with a 3-over par 72. Ortega will advance individually to NCS as well as teammate Jeff Thomas who had the next best score of 77. Contributing to Amador's team score was Jarrett Smith, who carded a 79, Brad Botelho with 81 and Scott Gregory with 83.
The Falcons were led by Tyler Galbraith who shot a 78, followed by Joseph Rosenthal (84), Matt Jones (86), Pat Murphy (89) and Michael Macon (91).
Swimming and Diving
Casey Brusch and Rebecca Payne led Foothill to the EBAL Diving Championship on Saturday at Foothill's new swimming venue. Brusch placed second and Payne, third.
Matt Trader led the boys diving team with his overall fourth-place finish at this years Diving Championships.
