Foothill swimmers, divers top California Foothill swimmers, divers top California (April 02, 2004)

League softball play opens

by Heidi Massie

Foothill's swimming and diving team is a powerhouse of talent. After winning the East Bay Athletic League title last year, the Falcons look to be the team to beat once again. Their competition this year is San Ramon Valley and Monte Vista, and the winner of those meets will most likely determine the league champion.

The Falcons won big against California last Friday with the varsity girls winning 134-51 and the boys finishing 123-63. The girls varsity 200 medley relay team of Kimmy Court, Kirsten Reed, Ell Isabel and Jennifer Narum took first with a time of 1:56.23. Fellow team members Alysia Daly, Alicia Young, Megan Nelson and Kim Schull finished third in 2:09.65. Ashley Schempp finished first in the 50 freestyle in 26.37, and Isabel finished first in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.66. Varsity girls diver Casey Brusch won the one meter dive with a score of 175.45.

The boys varsity finished with the top three times in the 100 freestyle from John Green (51.84), Ryan Peterson (52.00), and Michael Pestana (54.21), and in 100 back stroke from Matthew Kwan (1:01.06), Mike Arndt (1:01.57) and Daniel Romine (1:03.81). Matt Trader won the one meter dive with a score of 180.75.

The JV swimmers and divers proved their strength as well, sweeping most events. Samantha Panger took first in the 200 freestyle, and Mellisa Easley and Rachelle Vogt finished second and third respectively. Brittany Harper, Caitlin Guidoux and Morgan Williams took first, second and third places in the 100 breast stroke. Diver Krissa Partridge won the one meter with a score of 151.10.

The JV boys 200 freestyle was swept by Kevin Ambrose finishing first, followed by Brian Mancini and Phil Cheney. The 200 free relay team of Joel Miller, Joe Luke, Joey Cooper and Ryan Tsai took first with a time of 1:46.19.

Amador's varsity boys gave Monte Vista a run for their money in last Friday's home meet, but fell in the end, 71-98. The varsity girls team, crippled by four disqualifications throughout the meet, was beaten 41-129. Despite the struggle, Kristin Walovich placed first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.00. Garret Murphy took first in the 500 freestyle at 5:10.63, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Ryan Walker, Dane Hagfeldt, George Su and Kyle Shapiro, also placed first with a time of 1:41.82.
Softball

Foothill opened their softball league play Tuesday with a big win over San Ramon Valley, 5-1. Pitcher Valerie Arioto struck out eight holding the Wolves to 1 run. Stacey Compton's single loaded the bases followed by Ashley Coe's triple giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead in the fourth.

Amador's promising team fell victim Tuesday to Livermore's power-hitting, losing the opener, 2-1. The Dons' lone score by Alex Bright came with Paige Moxley's single up the middle.
Baseball

The Dons varsity baseball team rolled past College Park 8-1 Saturday in their last game before heading into league play with an 8-1 record.

Once again, leadoff hitter Stephen Gatehouse paced Amador's 11-hit attack. Brett Holt and Brett Zollman contributed to the offense with Holt's 2 hits and three RBIs and Zollman's 2 hits and two RBIs.

Starting pitcher Jake Zucker gave way after two innings to Kevin Bayly, who worked two and was followed by one-inning stints by Jeff Stephenson, Alex Bowman and Craig Sewall. Collectively, they allowed only four hits and struck out six, giving up a single unearned run.

Defensive highlight of the game was a pair of double plays turned by Nate Young and Travis Knuppe.
