Dons hoops advance to NorCal, lose in first round
(March 12, 2004) Amador's Andy Bocian named MVP for East Bay Athletic League
by Heidi Massie
The Amador boys varsity basketball team closed out their winning season in Sacramento on Tuesday night, with a loss to No. 3 seed Valley High School 79-57 in the NorCal Championship Tournament. A handful of Amador fans made the long drive to support their team and watched as the Dons fought against a taller and stronger team.
Senior Andy Bocian, named EBAL all-league most valuable player, led all scorers with 34 points. Stuart Yoshida scored 7 points while Guilian Guisti scored 8.
For the third year in a row, the Dons finished second in NCS Division II, losing to Hayward 50-70 at the Oakland Arena on Saturday, but they still earned the trip to NorCal. The showdown against powerhouse Hayward ended in a tough loss for the Dons, 70-50. Andy Bocian earned 16 points and snagged 11 rebounds while Stuart Yoshida scored 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Amador began their run for NCS with a win against Tennyson 84-73, followed by a semi-final win over Washington 72-57. The Dons closed out their season with a 21-9 record.
Girls NCS Basketball
The Lady Dons basketball team (16-10) ended their impressive season with the NCS Division II semi-finals loss to No. 1 seeded Carondelet, 76-56. Sophmore Sara Vanderhorst led the scoring with 16 points followed by freshman Shawnte King with 12, Whitney Metz and Jenna Nicholson each scored 9, and Leah Munley added 6.
Girls Lacrosse
The Foothill's girls varsity lacrosse team won big in a league game against Monte Vista, 15-6, last Friday. Leading the scoring was Cristen Andrews with 6 goals, and Jakie Pugh added 3. Sarah Rachmiel and Aly Kaye each added 2 goals, while Haley Saxton and Nicole Schmidt added 1 apiece. Goalie Sharri Brokowski had nine saves.
Amador's girls varsity lacrosse team delivered a 16-0 loss to California last week, thanks to goalie Hannah Winter's quick reflexes that kept Cal scoreless. Scoring for Amador were Kim Lerch with 5 goals, Jamie Loney with 3, Joanna LaFrancesca and Elisabeth Schulbe with 2 apiece, and Kristin Tucker, Stephanie Flowers, Jessica Thomas and Emma Bijesse each scoring 1.
The Lady Dons JV Lacrosse team also shut out California with a 14-0 win. Scoring for Amador was Sarina Madnick with 4 goals, and Julia Brodnick and Carly Rhodes each with 3. Strong defensive play by Melissa Triplett, Jules Narlock and Jessica Starkey contributed to the win.
Boys Lacrosse
Foothill's varsity lacrosse team, last year's Diablo Cup Champion, beat Leland 14-5 in a non-league match Tuesday. Leading the scoring was Colin Tracy with 3 goals, followed by Mark Swoboda, Jess Painter and Joe Watson with 2 goals each. Ted Fitzgerald, Lauren Schoch, Dan Proctor, Nick Piermarini and Ben Zils each added a goal. Goalie Chris Santos had one save.
Amador's varsity lacrosse gave St. Ignatius a tough game, losing 11-13 in the March 3 game. St. Ignatius, considered a top team in the state, was kept on the run. For almost every goal St. Ignatius scored, the Dons answered back.
Marcus Sylva led the Dons, scoring 6 goals. Jimmy Parsons added 3 goals while Steve Mundt and Chris VanLooey each added 1, and Clatin Kuhns recorded three assists. The defense was lead by Jeff Mehl, Gilbert Concepcion, Matt Jones and goalie Mike Fan with 14 saves.
