People open hearts

Open Heart Kitchen, which serves hot meals to Tri-Valley residents in need, announced that its second annual Auction & Crab Feed held recently raised more than $32,000, way more than the goal of $20,000. This is enough to serve more than 21,000 meals in 2004.

"We set a goal to double the amount raised last year, but we never imagined exceeding that goal by as much as we did," said Barbara Thomas, executive director.

The highest items were a dinner for eight women as guests of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, "5-Alarm Ladies Night," which went for $1,600; and the chance to name a street in Livermore, which fetched $1,000.

The group served 52,000 meals last year and this year hopes for at least 70,000 in Pleasanton and Livermore. For more information, call 580-1616 or visit www.OpenHeartKitchen.org. Foothill alumni sought

The city of Pleasanton, in cooperation with KB Home and Greenbriar Homes Communities, is offering 16 duet homes for first-time buyers on the Bernal property at Bernal Avenue and I-680. Eight of the homes will be in the Canyon Oaks subdivision at the south end of Case Avenue, and eight will be on the west side of the freeway in the Carlton Oaks neighborhood.

The homes, approximately 1,350 square feet with three bedrooms, two baths and attached garages, will be sold for $199,000 to the 16 homebuyers selected. To qualify, a four-person family's income must not exceed $65,000.

Applications for the below-market homes are available at the library, at the City Clerk's office at 123 Main St., and online at www.ci.pleasanton.ca.us, and are due March 22. Those meeting the qualifications will be entered into a random drawing at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, April 8, at the City Council chamber, 200 Old Bernal Ave.
