Lady Falcons take NCS soccer
(March 05, 2004) Amador's Neves wins NCS wrestling
by Heidi Massie
For the first time since 1997, the Foothill girls soccer team brought home the North Coast Section 3-A championship Saturday after shutting out Carondelet 2-0. This win followed last week's victory over San Ramon Valley 1-0 that sent Foothill to the finals.
Sophomore Danielle Sweeney, who is also a member of the Pleasanton Rage soccer team, scored the first goal early in the game, with an assist from Cristen Andrews. In the second half with 11 minutes to play, Andrews and Sweeney worked together again, but this time Andrews scored to make it the final 2-0. Goalie Amanda Lopez kept Carondelet out of the game with five saves.
Foothill closes out their winning season with a 20-5-2 record.
Girls NCS Wrestling
Amador freshman Lauren Neves placed first at NCS Saturday in the first ever NCS Girls Wrestling Championship in Oakland.
Neves wrestled her way to the championship match at the 114-pound class where she faced the No. 1 seeded senior wrestler from Pittsburg High School. Neves fought a hard and smart match. With 30 seconds remaining in the third period, Neves was leading 16 to 11 when her opponent called for a third time-out, which was ruled illegal. That gave Neves the win and the NCS title.
Boys NCS Wrestling
The Falcon boys wrestlers met their match at Saturday's NCS championships with the team finishing in ninth place. Phil Boyer finished fourth in the 112-pound class, missing out on a shot at the state competition. Kevin Randel at 140 and Kyle Foy at 171 finished sixth.
Girls NCS Basketball
The No. 6 seeded Lady Falcons' shot at the NCS ended quickly Tuesday night, but not until after a tough battle with College Park in the first round of Division II basketball playoffs. After going to double overtime, Foothill lost 63-61, despite their 12-point lead at halftime.
Leading the charge for Foothill was Liz Chan with a team high of 26 points and Ngozi Kanu with 12. Also contributing to Foothill's scoring was Kristen Brophy with 7, Courtney Shreve with 6, Amanda Triebwasser with 4, and Allison McClay with 3.
The team closed out their season with a 17-10 record.
Boys NCS Basketball
The Falcon boys fell to Pinole Valley 68-63 in the first round of Division II basketball playoffs Tuesday night. Foothill ended their season with a 17-10 record.
Though No. 8 seeded Foothill had an 8-point lead near the end of the third quarter, Pinole kicked into high gear and set the momentum for the rest of the game. Foothill came back several times to regain the lead, but Pinole continued to answer back.
Scoring for Foothill was Adam Greenaway with a team high 21 points, followed by Brian McDonough with 15. Andrew Steudle contributed 8 points, and Brian Hernbroth added 7. Anthony Martinez had six assists and two steals, and Mike Lamson shot for 6 points and had 6 rebounds.
