Campana Jazz Festival comes to town

It will be a jazzed-up weekend as the Campana Jazz Festival kicks off its 29th annual competition at the Amador Theater, 1155 Santa Rita Road, today and tomorrow, March 5-6. A performance by the Chabot Panhandlers at 7:30 p.m. tonight with kick off the two-day event.

The festival, named for former Amador Valley High School music director Jim Campana, features young jazz talent from throughout the Bay Area as well as educators in Saturday's competition. The event also showcases guest performers from throughout the country.

This year, the 21-person SFJazz All-Star High School Ensemble, with six student members from Pleasanton, will perform with Dee Spencer, guest artist and group director. Spencer is an internationally known keyboardist, composer, arranger and vocalist.

The six students in the high school ensemble include Vince Bruno, Pat Carroll, Bobby Jamieson, Daniel Romine. Amy Shen and Tyler Sussman.

Admission to the jazz festival costs from $5-$12 and tickets are available by calling 484-5202 or online at www.amadorband.org.
