Pleasanton women chosen for Hall of Fame

The 10 women chosen by Alameda County for its Hall of Fame this year include two from Pleasanton. Darla Stevens, recently retired executive director of Community Television (CTV), was chosen for her 27 years of work to create community access television. Astronaut Tammy Jernigan, now at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, was chosen for her outstanding work in science. She is a veteran of five Space Shuttle missions, in which she supervised critical pre-flight and in-flight activities.

The women will be honored at an awards ceremony Saturday, March 6, at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Oakland. The cost is $55; call (510) 535-7414. Teens can apply for sister-city exchange

The Pleasanton-Tulancingo Sister City Association is looking for teens to travel to Mexico this summer. Five Pleasanton high school students will be chosen to stay with families in Tulancingo as part of an exchange in which they also host a Mexican student in their homes. The Tulancingo teens arrive in Pleasanton on June 21 and leave July 19, accompanied by the local students. The Pleasanton teens return home Aug. 16.

Organizers have already visited the campuses at Amador Valley and Foothill high schools to tell students in Spanish classes about the Youth Exchange Ambassador program, and they are holding orientation meetings next week for students and parents. Students who apply must have studied Spanish, and it's also part of the agreement to host a student from Mexico although not necessarily the same student who hosts them. The orientations are a chance for students who attend private schools or are home-schooled to learn about the program and for parents to ask questions.

The presentations will be held from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 15; and 7-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the Chamber of Commerce, 777 Peters Ave., and applications will be available.

The Museum On Main Street, 603 Main St., is looking for old train photos and memorabilia of Tri-Valley railroad history to borrow for an exhibit to run May 1-Aug. 25. Call board member Jim Allen at 846-1885.
