Tons of Toys for Tots
(December 19, 2003) Marine Cpl. Carlos Gomez and Pfc. Anthony Atkins watched as Angela Schurhoff of Inglewood Drive helped her 22-month-old daughter Avery deliver toys for the Marines Toys for Tots collection Saturday at Pleasanton's main post office. More than 2-1/2 cargo vans full of toys were donated by Pleasanton residents in the one-day collection campaign by the local post office, with toys being collected by carriers along their delivery routes and at the post office on Black Avenue.
Postmaster Gurjant S. Khosa said that along with the toys, residents also contributed $1,328 in checks and cash in support of the campaign.
"I want to thank the community of Pleasanton for a tremendous support for this drive," Khosa said. "I'm hopeful that next year we will have even greater turnout and community support. Next year, I'm also going to expand to Dublin."
Gomez and Atkins are attached to the San Jose Marine 1st BTO, 4th Landing Support Battalion, which sponsors the Toys for Tots drive in the Bay Area. With fellow Marines, they took the Pleasanton collections back to their base where the toys will be wrapped and marked for delivery to needy children.
