(December 19, 2003) Dons lose ABC Championship in final round
by Heidi Massie
Foothill's basketball teams cleaned up this past weekend bringing home tournament championship titles for both the boys and girls teams.
After three days of games, the Falcon varsity team won the Wine Valley Classic by defeating Napa 71-68 in overtime, improving their overall record to 5-1. This was the Falcons' fourth tournament win in six years.
Adam Greenaway led the scoring with 23 total points, including five three-point goals, and was named the tournament MVP. Eric Haar, also a top scorer for the Falcons (10 2-2 22) was named to the all-tournament team.
The Lady Falcons got a championship of their own Saturday at the Stonebarger Tournament in Brentwood. Foothill (6-1) beat Concord High 37-25, thanks to their strong defense.
Once again, Liz Chan led the scoring with 15 points and was named MVP. Ngozi Kanu scored eight points and Kelly McGlinchy shot for seven.
The Amador Don boys fell to Hayward 60-53 Saturday in the championship round of Amador's ABC Tournament, ending the Don's shot at retaining their ABC title. Hayward took an early lead causing Amador to fight the rest of the game to keep up.
Stuart Yoshida had a team high of 18 points and was named to the all-tournament team along with Eric Pang (1 0-0 2), who had seven assists, and Andy Bocian, who scored 12 points. Bocian, who played well throughout the tournament, suffered an injury to his foot and left the game in the third period.
Girls Soccer
The Lady Dons (3-1-1, 1-0 EBAL) began their league play with a win Tuesday against Livermore, 1-0. Jennifer Mello scored the lone goal for the game on a free kick at 21:00. Goalie Erin Murray had four saves for the team.
Foothill's girls lost to San Ramon Valley 1-0 after a hard fought game in their league opener Tuesday. The Lady Falcons (7-1, 0-1 EBAL), being tough competitors, had 15 shots on the goal compared to San Ramon's five. Foothill's goalie Amanda Lopez made eight saves for the team.
Boys Soccer
Amador's JV team played a high-intensity game Monday against Acalanes that ended in a win for the Dons 1-0.
Defensively, the Dons were stout. Ryan Avendano, the player of the game for Amador, did not miss a tackle or a clear. Jordan King covered the field well with Robert Gutierrez playing a tough midfield. Goalie Joe Carlucci, with four saves, was on top of every Acalanes attempt. In the second half, the Dons scored following a display of teamwork between John Gondkoff to Matt Norlander to Carson Kvaternik, who beat Acalanes' goalie.
