Falcons, Dons win big in post-season
(December 05, 2003) Amador Valley wins 2003 Winter Soccer Classic
by Heidi Massie
The fall sports post-season provided excitement and big wins for both Foothill and Amador Valley high schools.
Girls Cross Country
The Lady Dons stunned the state running scene as they placed sixth in Division II at the State Championships on Nov. 29 in Fresno.
Leading the way for Amador were juniors Caitlin MacDonald and Kendall Nemeth. They were backed by seniors Sarah Stacionis and Liz Lowry, who were then followed quickly by sophomores Liz Wolf, Danielle Gwin and Kellyn Hansen.
The girls registered a team time of 97:24, ranking them among the 10 fastest teams ever in the North Coast Section Division II.
Girls Tennis
After a big winning season, Foothill lost in the semi-finals of the CIF NorCal tournament 7-0 in Fremont on Nov. 22.
It was the last match for seniors Bryce and Drew Kristal and Britt Hammel. The three have dominated EBAL league play throughout their four-year varsity reign. Bryce and Drew lost only one league match in four years.
The Falcon titles include: Bryce Kristal - EBAL Singles second place, three-time EBAL singles champion, NCS singles finalist, NCS Doubles champion with Drew Kristal; Drew Kristal - two-time EBAL singles finalist, NCS third place doubles, NCS first-place doubles with Britt Hammel and Bryce; Hammel - two-time EBAL doubles champion, open flight singles consolation champion, No. 1 NCS doubles with Drew Kristal and No. 3 place finish NCS doubles with Lauren Guerdat.
The Falcons finish co-champions for EBAL this year. The team was a strong force with returning varsity players Megan Kummer and Stephanie Wang, and newcomers Danielle Ong, Alyson Kaye, Betty Lin, Harini Ramireddy, Leslie Labarre and Lauren Guerdat.
Football
After winning the EBAL title and defeating Liberty in the first round of NCS playoffs, Foothill fell to Pittsburg's sizeable team Saturday 55-7 in NCS 4A semi-finals play.
Pittsburg's hefty line, which averages 290 pounds per player, proved too much for the depleted Falcons. Foothill scored in the third quarter when quarterback Kyle Barker passed to Travis Smith for a 14-yard touchdown to avoid the shutout.
Barker finished his season as the league MVP and was 14 of 34 for 100 yards in his final game.
JV Football
Amador's JV team captured the league title after defeating Foothill 7-0 in the final game of the season. Fumbles, interceptions, sacks and blocked punts were the highlights of the action. The game remained scoreless until the third quarter when Tyler Andujar broke outside and ran 65 yards for the first and only score, followed by Mike Purpura's extra point.
Late in the fourth quarter, Foothill was inside Amador's 30-yard line, but Amador's defense stiffened and the Dons took over on downs to finish the game. The Dons finished the season 9-1; four of the wins were shutouts.
Winter Soccer Classic
The Dons battled it out with the Richmond Oilers on Saturday for the Gold division championship of the Winter Soccer Classic.
In the first half, the Dons broke through when Dylan Curtis dribbled the ball to the Oiler goal, sent a cross back through the box and scored for Amador when the ball hit off a defender. Richmond then tied it up 1-1, the final score for the game. Neither team scored in two 10-minute overtime periods.
After a scoreless first sudden-death period, the Dons were given a free kick 40 yards out in the second sudden death. Curtis found Kyle Schlumpf, who flicked the ball with his head to an open Alex Amador. Amador took the ball and scored, winning the 2003 Classic for the Dons.
