Destructive thief racks up $1,000 in damages

An unknown suspect caused $1,000 in damages, gaining access to a locked vehicle overnight Nov. 26 before stealing $500 in property. Police said the victim had parked and locked his vehicle in an apartment complex parking lot in the 5000 block of Owens Drive about 6:40 p.m. Nov. 26. When he returned to the vehicle about noon the following day, he discovered the driver's side front window had been smashed and a leather bag and CDs were missing, police said. Prior to breaking the window, police believe the suspect had attempted to break into the car by prying on both the right and left door locks. The suspect also tried to remove the vehicle's stereo, but instead damaged it, police said. Three latent fingerprints were found on the car and were taken as evidence. While a store employee was working Nov. 24, a thief slipped behind a counter and grabbed her purse, taking $100 in property. The victim reported to police that she was working at Macy's in the Stoneridge Shopping Center and had last seen her purse about 7 p.m. The purse was left behind a counter under the store cash register, police said. About 10 p.m., the victim realized her purse was missing, although she did not see anyone suspicious. Police said the store security tapes are being reviewed for additional information. An unattended purse left at Sh'Booms on Hopyard Road was targeted for a theft Nov. 23, leaving the victim with a $416 loss. The victim told police she had left her purse unattended for 15 minutes at the bar counter about 12:30 a.m. Upon her return, she discovered that someone had taken her purse, police said. Also stolen were Sacramento Kings tickets that were in the purse, police said. The victim reported that she had contacted her financial institutions and reported the theft. The case has been forwarded to investigations.
