72 Golfers, ages 6-15, compete for the Junior Skills Championship Cup at Pleasanton Driving Range

The Pleasanton Golf Academy's second annual Junior Skills Challenge Championship was held from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 9, at Pleasanton Driving Range. Some 72 junior golf finalists competed for the Junior Skills Championship Cup. The Pleasanton Driving Range hosted the event.

From June 19 to Aug. 24, approximately 250 girls and boys, ages 5-15, came from all over the East Bay to attend weeklong golf camps. The nine finalists of each camp met Sunday to compete for a first, second and third place in total points for longest drive, pitching, and putting competitions in each of three flights. The three flights were pre-determined based on the skill level of each junior.

The results were as follows: Overall Champion for 2001 (highest points overall):
Michael Hornig, 10, of Pleasanton won the Junior Skills Championship Cup. A duplicate perpetual Cup on display at the Academy will have Michael's name engraved next to last year's winner.
First Flight: First Place - Travis Rowney, 7, of Pleasanton Second Place - Lauren Russman, 13, of Pleasanton Third Place - Michael Mital, Age 14 of Pleasanton
Second Flight: First Place - Joi Pentin, 10, of Pleasanton Second Place - Kyle Moreno, 6, Pleasanton Third Place - Matthew Berg, 13, of Pleasanton
Third Flight: First Place - Christopher Polis, 10, of Pleasanton Second Place - Eric Greilich, 8, of Livermore Third Place - Stephen Ferrel, 8, of Pleasanton

After the competition, the players and their families attended an Awards BBQ Picnic sponsored by the academy. Approximately 300 people attended.
