Augustin Bernal Park

This city-owned park, adjacent to Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park, covers 237-acres and offers hiking trails with panoramic views, picnic tables and restrooms. Horses (residents only), dogs and mountain bikes also allowed. Access is up Golden Eagle Way and Pleasanton residents must show proof of residency at the gate. Non-residents must obtain a permit, valid for one week, at the City Parks and Community Services office.

Del Valle Regional Park

Located on Lake Del Valle in Livermore, this 4,000-acre park offers numerous water activities. There is a 750-acre lake that offers swimming, boating, sailboarding, boat launch, boat rental, beach and fishing. There are also trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and amenities such as water for horses, equestrian staging, parking, picnic tables, restrooms, camping and naturalist-led programs. Sailboard and food concessions open part of the year. Hours: 6 a.m.-dusk. Fishing permits are required. Day use fee is $6.

Mt. Diablo State Park

With a 3,849-foot summit, this park has widespread views of the Bay Area that are accessible by hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding. Located off Diablo Road, off I-680 in Danville, the park also offers camping, rock climbing, observation deck, wildlife viewing, picnic areas and restrooms. The Summit Visitor Center and art gallery are open Wed-Sun, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. with possible expanded days. The Mitchell Canyon Interpretive Center at the north end of the park in Clayton is open weekends and some holidays, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in summer, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in winter. Mailing address: 96 Mitchell Canyon Rd., Clayton 94517. Park hours: 8 a.m.-sunset. Admission fee of $6 per car. Mount Diablo Interpretive Association runs the Mitchell Canyon Center, and helps fund park programs. The organization can be visited at www.mdia.org.

Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park

From I-680 exit at Castlewood Drive and turn left onto Foothill Road. The staging area is about two miles from Castlewood Dr. This 3,163-acre park offers a 25-mile multipurpose trail system with canyon views, remote streams and ridgetop vistas. It has trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and water for horses, parking, restrooms and a pond. Its gates are open 8 a.m.-sunset. Current hours are posted at gate. Park curfew is 10 p.m.-5 a.m.

This 249-acre park offers water activities. There is an 80-acre lake for swimming, boating and fishing, boat launch, boat rental and fishing docks. There are also trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Parking, picnic tables, birdwatching, restrooms, food concession and horseshoe pit are also available. The park opens at 6 a.m. most months and closes 6-9 p.m. depending on the season. Fishing permits are required. A concession runs a four-flume waterslide park with separate admission. It's open on weekends in spring and fall and daily in the summer. The regional park charges $6 parking.

Sunol and Ohlone Regional Wilderness

Located off I-680 at the Calaveras exit, this 6,858-acre park offers trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, drinking water, parking, visitor center, picnic tables, restrooms, camping and nature programs. Hours: 7 a.m.-dusk. Permits/maps for the Ohlone Wilderness Trail are $2. Parking fee is $5 with an additional $4 for trailored vehicles. Dog fee is $2. Ventek takes fees when kiosk is closed. Be sure to display membership card or receipt on dash.
